Congresswoman Marilyn Strickland's

The submission deadline is February 19th, 2026 (previously February 26th). This change enables our panel of local educators, community leaders, and influential figures to evaluate the essays and announce winners promptly during Black History Month.

Middle School (Grades 7-8): Write a 500-700-word essay about a significant Black historical figure in Washington State. Explain the obstacles they faced and why their story matters today.

How Students Can Submit: Submit only through the official Google Form. Email submissions to the office will not be accepted.
